In the rain, Al wanders the city and thinks of the memories he had. Sitting in an alley by himself, Al meets two Ishbal boys who have stolen food for their comrades.
Elsewhere in the city, Ed and Winry search the streets in search of Al.
The boys take Al to the Ishbal camp underneath the city. Here he meets up with Scar again. Al is sworn to secrecy regarding the location of the camp. He finds out that they were driven underground because they were attacked by the military.
Rick, one of the two brothers, runs off to retrieve the locket that was his mother's. Leo, his brother, dashes off with Rick. Scar tells the elder that he will bring the boys back safely, and Al follows.
Outside searching for the locket, Rick and Leo are spotted by the military. On their way back, Leo expresses his hate for his mother because she could not do anything to save them when the military raided their house. They are followed to the location of the hideout and attacked. During the attack, Rick is captured and Leo, Scar, and Al are forced to retreat.
Using his connections to the military, Al finds out from Ross that the attackers are a group of mercenaries whose base if located on the outskirts of the city. Scar, Al, Leo, and the elder head out to rescue Rick.
Calling from the hospital, Ross tells Winry and Ed the information she gave Al, and the two rush off to that location.
Al and Scar commence their attack on the building with the mercenaries inside in hopes of saving Rick. While the leader of the mercenaries goes after Scar, the rest of his men, including Barry, attack Al. Shaken by Barry's psycological warfare, Al is easily pushed around.
Just Barry is going to finish off Al, Ed intervenes. Finally, Ed is able to ask his question. Ed wants to know if Al hates him for putting Al inside that body. Now able to set aside his reservations, Al easily defeats Barry.
Even with the use of alchemy, the leader of the mercenaries is easily defeated by Scar. Lauching his final attack, Barry is split in two and killed by Scar when his blood seal burns away. Grabbing ahold of the pack on the leader's back, he causes it to explode, sending spear tips flying.
Rick is struck in the center of his heart but saved by his mother's locket. The locket opens revealing pills. Upon further examination, the elder notes that they are eye medicine.
The elder tells Leo that his mother only pretended to be able to see so that they would not worry. Leo comes to the realization that the reason their mother ran to their room was to look for them.
In the Fuhrer's office, his secretary disposes of the mercenary leader in a peculiar way.
With the sun rising, the survivors of Ishbal head towards another group of refugees. Scar confirms that Al truely is a human. Ed finds out from Scar that his people sought the Philosopher's Stone to avoid being destroyed by the military.
