Ed and Al are dropped off at a secluded island to cool their heads. Forbidden from using alchemy, the two brothers are reminded of the training they went through when they were young.
Izumi-sensei feels that the two need some time to stop and think things over.
Walking along the beach, Ed and Al reminisce about what they were like back then. When they were young, Izumi-sensei dropped them off leaving them with only a knife for survival. On the uninhabited island, the two have to survive for one month. In that time, they must figure out the meaning to the phrase One is All, All is One.
If they are unable to answer the question, they will be sent back to Resenbool.
That night, they go to sleep with empty stomachs hoping to find food in the morning. However, Ed wakes up in the middle of the night to find a huge monstrous figure towering over him. Nearly escaping his club, Ed and Al are forced to scatter in order to escape. But before they can do so, each of them takes a beating.
The two find each other a short time later; however, they are still being persued by the scary person.
Seeing a fox on the island today reminds the two of the time when a rabbit they caught was stolen away by a mother fox. The two decide upon eating fish instead of hunting animals. However, just as they are about to dig into a fish they caught, the scary person comes back and scares them away.
When Al leaves the fire unattended for a short while, he returns to find the fish gone and fire stomped out. There is someone else on the island besides them. The two decide to search around for this mystery person.
As time passes, the brothers find ways to survive through trial and error. As time passes, Ed begins to question why they came to the island.
When it began to rain, they were forced to construct a shelter to stay dry. Dying of hunger, Ed wonders what would happen if they were to die here. Al replies that Winry and Pinako would be sad and that they would not be able to reach their goal.
Al calls out to a silouette thinking its Ed, but when Ed drops down from a tree above him, they realize that there really is someone out there besides them.
In another one of their confrontations with the scary person, Ed has the wind knocked out of him. Lying on the ground, Ed witnesses ants working together to take apart a cicada that has died.
Suddenly, Ed thinks of his mother and gets up. He demands that Al be released. To his surprise, Ed watches as the person drops Al and walks away.
Ed realizes that even if they were to die, the world would continue to move along as if nothing had happened. When any existence dies, the body remains and returns to the earth. The food chain is a system that moves in a cycle regardless of location.
Realizing this, Ed is able to kill a rabbit for food. They realize that they are only a small part of the flow of life encircling the world.
After thirty days, Izumi-sensei returns and asks for a response to her question. Al responds that All is the world and One is the individual. Surprised by their response, Izumi-sensei deems that they came move onto the real training.
On the day she returns to pick up Ed and Al, she asks Ed and Al if they are trying to regain something they lost because of a mistake by making another mistake. Ed replies that even if they are, they have no other choice but to move forward because they are still alive.
Suddenly, a boy appears out of the jungle. Who is he?
